Academic terms, or terms, represent academic periods during which actual studies and classes take place at the institution.

Terms enable institutions to organize and schedule their academic calendars in DreamApply. For example, if your institution follows a semester-based model with a Fall semester and Spring semester each year, you must create corresponding terms in DreamApply. This setup is typically done once a year to prepare the system for the upcoming academic cycle.

Intakes

In DreamApply, intakes are used to define the admission timeline for specific academic terms. They include all stages of the application process such as:

application submission,
review,
final decisions,

culminating in applicant enrollment. While academic terms indicate when students begin their studies, intakes capture all the steps that lead to that point.

Each intake targets a specific academic term and is linked to it. You can structure your admission workflow to include multiple intakes that target the same term. For example, you can have an Early intake, Primary intake and Late intake, all linked to the same term. Think of the term as a reservoir and each intake as a pipe that directs applicants toward it.

In DreamApply, institutions can link programmes to one or more intakes. On the programme description page and programme tiles in the catalog, DreamApply displays a set of Apply now! buttons — one for each linked intake. Instead of showing intake names, the buttons are labeled with the target academic terms, for example, Fall semester 25/26. This helps applicants immediately understand when their studies would begin.

Depending on the intake settings, some buttons can be active, while others can be disabled or hidden to show that the intake has not yet started.
